Creating outdoor compounds for the Chimpanzees and Gorillas

The rebuilding of the indoor enclosures being completed, our Gorillas and Chimpanzees, at present, need new outdoor compounds. As far as the Chimpanzees are concerned, the existing exhibit is due to be equipped with pane and steel nets in a similar way as inside the Ape House. The trench will be filled in and the exhibit fitted out with tree trunks, ropes and hammocks. This will allow the Chimpanzees to use the third dimension whereas the exhibit will considerably grow in volume.

The Gorillas are due to be granted a spacious outdoor compound. Skipping the walkway will make it possible to add the adjacent meadow and the former Onager enclosure to this aim. As a result, the Gorillas will have at their disposal a 2000-square-meter compound including a great variety of plants as well as climbing trees. The sensitive Gorillas are in a particular need of a large variety of possible occupations and sufficient opportunities to withdraw from direct closeness with other group members as well as with visitors.

Once the prerequisites of appropriate containment met, there exists no animal group more impressive than a Gorilla family roaming across its territory under the lead of a massive male silver back.
